approach: I spent close to 4 years creating and developing UI and UX for interactive prototypes, explorations and demos for Xbox and Microsoft. These experiences leveraged new technology and innovative approaches to influence and jumpstart future product features. I drove design from initial discussion and ideation through development by creating sketches, wireframes, storyboards, animations, assets and revised UI/UX solutions.
Notable features/products incubated:
- Xbox One & Kinect Sign In
- Skype for the Living Room
- Live TV on Xbox One
- Achievement Snap
- Xbox App on Windows 10
- & more still in development
timeframe: 2 - 6 months per project
approach: This project focused on creating a more energized cell phone store with a huge technology touchscreen and interactive lifestyle segments. High priority was put on a ‘do-it-yourself’ approach that clearly displayed the phones and accessories while also emphasizing their key customer types. I was in charge of art direction, strategy, creation of the entire graphic system and developing a tone of voice. I also worked with an interior designer who created most of the sketches that were then filled with the graphic system. As this project developed, more attention was put on developing the content and storyboards for the interactive touch points throughout the store.
timeframe: 3 design phases over 5 months
approach: Island Dog Sign Company badly needed to update and redesign their website as the existing one was difficult to navigate and out-of-date. Modularity and usability drove this preferred concept that maintained many of the same focus areas as the existing site, but let their work stand out above the details.
timeframe: sporadically over 1 - 2 months
approach: Over 2 years, I focused on developing the AT&T brand across various retail spaces, custom kiosks and entire graphic systems. I created designs that sharpened the brand by simplifying the use of color, layout, and messaging while also pushing its boundaries by incorporating illustration as a key element. Along with earning the client’s trust, I had the opportunity to write copy and create custom illustrations to be used by AT&T in the future.
When given a design problem or task, I find that It's helpful for me to start with a sketch and get my thoughts arranged before moving to the computer to revise further. I also discovered that a successful brand must communicate with its audience in three ways: Announce. Inform. Remind.
timeframe: multiple projects over 2 years
approach: The identity of a brand must evoke its core values and personality in a split second. Color, form and hierarchy all play an important roll when developing an appropriate mark. Here are a few of the identities that I’ve created over the years for internal events and sub-brands, as well as, external clients.
timeframe: varies upon client
approach: Capital One is known as the humorous, tongue-in-cheek credit card company. When it expanded its operations to include more focus on banking, it needed to make an impact and develop a more helpful tone of voice.
After ‘a fresh approach to banking’ was chosen as the as the design motto, I was 1 of 2 designers exploring different visual concepts, themes, and systems. After my concept was chosen to revise further, I developed a modular design system leveraging the circular elements, patterning, bold colors, and simple phrases from the earlier concepts. Additionally, I sourced and edited stock imagery, gained experience copywriting, and had the opportunity to present the final concept to the client.
timeframe: 3 design phases over 8 months
approach: Illustration was the very reason that I got into design and I strive to do more of it throughout my career. It does a great job of humanizing a brand while also adding a creative touch beyond simply typography and layout.
Shown here are single-line illustrations for CleanScapes (brand and recycling campaign), a sub-brand illustration for Salomon-Adidas, an ink-blot study for Saturn, character illustrations for a board game for the University of Cincinnati, and poster designs for Seattle Weekly’s REVERB local music festival.
timeframe: varies depending upon need
